Here are some of the plants that have been featured in previous weekly newletters as "Plants of the Week." We explain what we like about them and why we think so highly of these plants in particular.

This plant list is definitely not a complete list of the plants we offer. We have over 4,000 plant listings in our label database indicating how many different plants and varieties we have carried over the past several years. Many of the plants here have been previous "Plants of the Week" from our weekly newsletter. They include very common plants that all gardens need to a rare exotic plant that we were able to find once and may not find again. Please be aware that not all of these plants may be available at different times of the year. Also, if the plant was a special find it may not be right for every gardener or garden. If you have any questions, please come in or call the nursery and we can answer them.

Mullein Verbascum thapsus
Native to Eurasia, this biennial herb is extremely well adapted to Texas soils and summers. Grown in full sun with good drainage, the rosette of green-silver leaves will reach 3-4 feet around. In the second year, mullein sends up a stoutly erect flowering stalk up to eight feet tall with a spire of sweetly fragrant yellow flowers. Due to its extreme propensity for spreading by seed, you may want to cut off the blooms of mullein before the seeds mature. Besides being a striking plant in the landscape and extremely low maintenance, mullein has been used traditionally to treat a variety of lung disorders due to its expectorant, anti-inflammatory, antibiotic, astringent, and demulcent qualities.

Pride of Barbados
This gorgeous perennial shrub is definitely in the spotlight this time of year in Central Texas. Believed to be a native of West India, this plant can reach heights of 6-10 feet before large clusters of red, orange, and yellow appear in mid-summer. Plant in full sun and cut back in early spring.
