Here are some of the plants that have been featured in previous weekly newletters as "Plants of the Week." We explain what we like about them and why we think so highly of these plants in particular.

This plant list is definitely not a complete list of the plants we offer. We have over 4,000 plant listings in our label database indicating how many different plants and varieties we have carried over the past several years. Many of the plants here have been previous "Plants of the Week" from our weekly newsletter. They include very common plants that all gardens need to a rare exotic plant that we were able to find once and may not find again. Please be aware that not all of these plants may be available at different times of the year. Also, if the plant was a special find it may not be right for every gardener or garden. If you have any questions, please come in or call the nursery and we can answer them.

Pride of Barbados
This gorgeous perennial shrub is definitely in the spotlight this time of year in Central Texas. Believed to be a native of West India, this plant can reach heights of 6-10 feet before large clusters of red, orange, and yellow appear in mid-summer. Plant in full sun and cut back in early spring.

Ruby Crystals Grass Melinis nerviglumis
Gorgeous and compact, this clumping grass stays around 2 feet by 2 feet, loves the full sun, and needs very little water to get established. It's blue-gray foliage is the perfect complement to it's flowering stalks of rosy-pink plumes. Protect it from hard freezes in the winter, and watch this little beauty put on a showy display summer through fall.

Red Turks Cap Malvaviscus drummondii
Turk's Cap is a delightful and versatile perennial with attractive, rather rounded foliage and cheerful orbicular red blooms sporting twisted petal folds along the outsides and a protruding red stamen out of the top. Turk's cap will grow in the shade. If left alone long enough, Turk's Cap will eventually colonize a bed, but is otherwise a very easy, low maintenance plant with many applications. Definitely a good candidate for that tricky spot in the garden where nothing else will grow. It is also deer resistant.

Will Flemming Yaupons Ilex vomitoria spp. "Will Flemming"
These vertical evergreen shrubs make a striking statement in your landscape. They maintain a very compact columnar shape topping off at fifteen feet. Being drought tolerant and deer resistant, they lend a dramatic hand to any garden.

Wire Grass or Mexican Heather Stipa tenuissima
Located in our Grasses section.
Commonly known as 'Wire Grass' or 'Mexican Heather Grass' this beautiful native turns heads all summer with it's golden wheat-like tresses made fluid by the merest breath of wind. In full sun, dense green vertical clumps reach 2 feet in height and width, while in the shade a more prostrate habit is adopted, keeping them under a foot in height. Incredibly tolerant of poor, rocky soils and requiring very little water, plant them alone or in rows or large groupings wherever Xeric areas need softening.
