Critter Deterrent Techniques and RecipeTo make a spray to discourage deer, mix 4 egg whites in a gallon of water with 1 teaspoon of liquid soap. Adding habanero peppers will help. Spray the foliage of the plants early morning or late afternoon. The spray must be reapplied after rain or after watering if you use a sprinler. The following techniques to discourage cats is from Trisha Shirey, Lake Austin Spa and Resort. "The most effective thing I have found for cats is providing an 'outdoor rest area' by providing nice soft soil for their use. I usually use cheap potting soil (a waste of Vortex!) in an area that they frequent. A simple board frame will confine it and you might want to 'seed it' with some waste to give them the idea. (My dogs are usually happy to clean the box often - gross!) In planting beds, chicken wire or fencing with small openings, 2 by 4 inches, laid on the ground after shrubs are in and then pinned down with u-shaped pins works well for cats and dogs digging in gardens. When a thick layer of mulch is added you won't see the wire. This also helps with those nasty digging dillos. A thick layer of shredded mulch works well with my cats. Too much work to get to soil? The shredded mulch mats together and is more difficult for them to dig up to get to soft soil. Chip type mulches don't discourage them much. If one has access to sweet gum balls, pine cones or pecan shells, these will help discourage digging. I use orange peels and/or aluminum foil in container plants indoors until kittens figure out that these are not a substitute box."
