VISIT OUR INFO DESK

At The Natural Gardener, we’re passionate about providing our customers with accurate, cutting-edge horticultural information. That’s why we’ve dedicated a whole section of our store to it. The Natural Gardener Info Desk provides FREE professional consultation and diagnosis of plant problems seven days a week. We have a microscope, a reference library, online resources, and experienced gardeners on staff ready to help you solve your toughest gardening mysteries.

Bringing a plant or insect sample? For the health of our nursery, all samples must arrive in a plastic baggie or other closed container. If the problem is manifesting on leaves, please bring samples of both diseased and healthy leaves if possible.

Bringing a lawn sample? Please bring a sample of sod approximately 12” x 12” x 1.5” deep. The sample needs to include both affected turf and green/live grass. (If Take All Root Rot is suspected, accurate diagnosis requires live grass.) Please bring your sample in a sturdy box or tub that won’t easily spill.

SEEDS

The Natural Gardener would love to see more people growing their own food. That’s why we stock an amazing selection of seeds and seed-starting supplies. We carry hundreds of conventional, organic, heirloom and open-pollinated varieties of vegetables and herbs. All of the seeds we carry are non-GMO and we’ve either grown or researched all the varieties we sell. We also carry flower seeds, including heirloom varieties, and in season we have seed for native Texas grasses and wildflowers. Give your seeds the best possible start in life with The Germinator, our own all natural seed starting mix. Our other seed starting supplies vary by season, but generally we have hand seeders, dial seeders, seed and plant markers, rooting hormones, peat pots, seed starting trays, humidity domes, and seedling heat mats.

FERTILIZERS, SOIL AMENDMENTS, AND BIOSTIMULANTS

If anyone’s ever claimed you’ll sacrifice results when going organic, tell them about the Stillhouse Study. Texas A&M University and the City of Austin compared results of several synthetic and all-natural fertilizers, and an all-natural product won first place. It produced greener grass, healthier roots, and unlike the conventional fertilizers tested it didn’t pollute runoff water. The winner was our very own Lady Bug brand All Purpose Fertilizer. We’re proud of all of our Lady Bug products , and we stock lots other great brands, too. We carry hundreds of natural fertilizers, soil amendments, and biostimulants to keep your plants and soil healthy. Plant health (and world health) depends on soil health , so it’s crucial to use natural gardening products. They enhance the life of your soil, rather than destroy it. Viva la interdependence!

PEST AND DISEASE CONTROLS

No matter what’s bugging you — indoors or out — we can help. Sometimes, the best approach is to do nothing, so just be patient and allow beneficials to do their work. Other times, plants may need a little help, so we offer all sorts of natural pest and disease controls. We have non-toxic repellents for insects and animals, bird and deer netting, floating row cover, baits, sticky traps, pheromone traps, diatomaceous earth, Bt , and a full line of botanical pesticides. We also have live ladybugs and beneficial nematodes in season.

To treat plant and soil diseases, we have potassium bicarbonate, liquid copper, beneficial bacteria, and powdered, granular, and liquid sulfur. If weeds are the pest, we can help you keep your soil and plants healthy so weeds won’t take hold. We can teach you about sheet mulching and solarizing to get rid of weeds. We may also recommend products like weed barrier fabrics, corn gluten, or vinegar or cinnamon-based herbicides. There’s no longer any reason to use conventional chemical pest or disease controls. We have effective natural controls that are better for you, your family, and the planet.

COMPOSTERS, COMPOST BINS, AND COMPOST CROCKS

Help move America toward a zero-waste future by composting your household’s kitchen and yard waste. We can teach you how to maintain a healthy compost pile, and we’ve got tools and equipment to make it easy. We have simple wire compost bins, worm (vermicomposting ) bins, stationary bins, compost tumblers, and even beautiful crocks for your kitchen scraps. We have tools called compost aerators that make it easy to mix and turn your compost pile. If you’re a do-it-yourself type, we have books and information on building your own backyard composting area. Don’t waste that waste- turn it into compost!

RAIN BARRELS

Turn an inch of rain into 500 gallons of free water! Because the majority of a household’s water use goes into maintaining the landscape, a rain barrel can quickly pay for itself. Plants love rainwater. Collecting rainwater makes good sense on every level, and many cities even offer rebates on the purchase of rainwater collection equipment. (Check with your city to see if rebates are available.) We carry several styles of barrels for household use, with an average capacity of 65 gallons.

POTTERY

Whether you’re looking for one small pot for a windowsill or an ensemble of 50 large pieces for an estate garden, The Natural Gardener won’t disappoint you. We have one of the best pottery selections in the state of Texas. We carry high-quality pieces made in the USA, China, Vietnam and Malaysia, and we have pots in almost every shape, size and color imaginable. In addition to pots and planters, we also have unusual and lovely accents for the garden. We have pottery spheres, birdbaths and gorgeous glazed fountains in an assortment of styles and colors. (Disappearing fountain kits and delivery services are available.) Come wander through our beautiful selection of pottery to find a piece you’ll love.

Gardening shouldn’t be a chore- it should be fun. Having the right tool can make all the difference. That’s why, from dibbles to twine, The Natural Gardener carries the best tools and supplies for every gardening need. We’re one of the few stores where you can still find heirloom-quality garden tools. We also carry ergonomic gardening tools. We have tools for digging including dibbles/dibblers, trowels, shovels, cultivators, forks, mattocks, and rock bars. Our cutting tools include pruners, loppers, saws, shears, and knives. (We’re especially proud to offer Felco brand cutting tools and parts, the best of the best.) When it comes to weeding, we have draw hoes, diamond hoes, Korean hoes, oscillating hoes, cobra head weeders, Cape Cod weeders, dandelion forks, disc weeders, and John Dromgoole’s favorite, the Weed Popper. For garden cleanup, we carry bow rakes, leaf rakes, bamboo rakes, and even expandable rakes that allow easy access between plants. To protect your hands while you work, we have high-quality leather gloves, rubberized gloves, and even fingerless gloves for detail work. For rosarians or cacti-collectors, we have gloves with gauntlets, and we even have good, old-fashioned canvas and jersey gloves. When it comes to garden accessories we carry helpful things like like biodegradable twine, plant labels and markers, net trellises, tomato cages, scarecrows, plant stakes, plant ties, saucers, plant hooks, trugs, rolling buckets, kneeling benches, pot lifters, and plant dollies. We also stock weed barrier (both paper and fabric), floating row cover, greenhouse plastic, soil test kits, siphon mixers, hose-end sprayers, and several styles of rain gauges and thermometers. Seasonally, we even stock supplies such as shade cloth, frost cloth and nifty pop-up greenhouses.

WATERING TOOLS AND DRIP IRRIGATION SUPPLIES

Most of a home’s water bill goes toward maintaining its lawn and landscape. At The Natural Gardener, we have tools and techniques to help you conserve water and save money. We carry soaker hoses, no-kink hoses, lead-free hoses, hose-repair kits and parts, quick connectors, watering wands, watering cans, slow-release watering bags, high-efficiency stationary sprinklers, and drip irrigation parts and kits. Drip irrigation is most efficient way to water, and of all the drip irrigation systems we’ve seen, Submatic is the best. That’s why it’s the only brand we carry. In addition to watering systems, tools and equipment, we also have natural anti-transpirants and soil amendments that will help hold water in the soil. Water is our planet’s most valuable resource. Let’s work together to make the best use of every precious drop.

We also have a line of exquisitely made hand-woven palm hats in styles and sizes for both men and women. Gardeners and non-gardeners will both appreciate our selection of books. We have the very best gardening reference books, as well as great field guides and nature books. If the choices are too overwhelming, you can always buy a gift card. Natural Gardener gift cards are available in any amount and they never expire.

OUTDOOR FURNITURE AND GARDEN DECOR

If you’re in the market for unusual outdoor furniture or garden decorations, we carry things that you won’t find in most other stores. We have heavy-duty Adirondack chairs made of recycled plastic, available in every color of the rainbow. We have metal benches in several different styles and colors. We have lovely bistro sets meant for the garden, but they’re pretty enough to use indoors. So are our Mad Mat rugs, so gorgeous you’ll be amazed that they’re made completely of recycled plastic. You may be tempted to use some of our garden art in the house. Our extensive selection includes intricate Haitian oil-drum art, concrete statuary and birdbaths, metal statuary and plant stands, kinetic garden art, beautiful metal arbors and trellises, and folk art.

WILD BIRD SUPPLIES

Whether you’re a backyard naturalist or a serious birder, we think you’ll be impressed with our selection of wild bird supplies. We stock a wide variety of feeders, birdseed, feeder accessories, birdhouses (including owl houses), birdbaths, and more. We have an amazing assortment of hummingbird feeders in both traditional and highly-decorative styles. We also sell accessories like water wigglers and squirrel baffles. Be sure to visit our book room for pocket guides and field guides for identifying birds. We also have books to help you create beautiful backyard bird habitats.

KIDS’ TOOLS AND TOYS

“Why try to explain miracles to your kids when you can just have them plant a garden?” -Robert Brault

Watering, planting, and observing nature can help kids develop an appreciation for the miraculous world we all share. The magic of seeing a giant sunflower emerge from a tiny seed may turn a tiny person into a lifelong gardener. The Natural Gardener loves kids, and we promote getting kids outside and into the garden at an early age. Our store is a kid-friendly place, and we stock an assortment of kid-sized tools. We also have nature-themed coloring books, sticker books and toys that are perfect for relaxing indoors after a busy morning in the garden.
